Al-Fahad Al-Dhahabi presents its brief for Monday, September 28, 2026. We wish peace and safety for all our families. This year many Iraqi households have asked us the same question: how do we protect our savings? Here is an honest answer.
The situation: The war hit Iraq’s oil exports hard in the spring. Foreign reserves fell by about $20 billion, prices rose and the dinar moved up and down. The good news: exports have now recovered to more than 3 million barrels a day. The dinar should benefit, but reserves take time to rebuild.
Gold’s record: Gold is priced in dollars worldwide, so it does not depend on any one currency. Over the past year it has risen about 17%, roughly $637 per ounce. Today it trades near $4,300–4,350, about 7% lower than at the end of August — the Dubai 21K reference is about $615 per mithqal before making charges.
For our customers — saving wisely: For saving, choose pieces with low making charges — plain bangles, coins and small bars — because making charges are not recovered when you sell. Buy small amounts regularly, for example monthly, rather than one big purchase. Keep your receipts and certificates safely. Jewellery you will wear is a pleasure; gold you are saving should be simple.
The honest cautions: Gold also falls. It dropped from above $5,500 in January to below $4,000 in June before recovering. Keep gold as part of your savings, not all of it, and never borrow to buy it.
